Facebook tipped to launch new mobile phone with HTC

27/07/2012

Facebook has moved a step closer to taking on Apple in the global mobile market, with reports indicating the firm has teamed up with HTC to develop its own phone.

Over the past few months, the social networking giant has been bullish in setting out its plans for expansion, with the burgeoning mobile internet market set to be central to these.

Now, on the back of the release of its latest financial figures, Facebook has failed to dismiss speculation that it is working with the technology firm to create its own branded phone, nor that several former Apple employees are contributing to the work.

"Our mobile strategy is simple: we think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social," a statement released by the company in the wake of this growing speculation read.

"We're working across the entire mobile industry to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world," it added.

This comes just weeks after Facebook acquired the mobile photography company Instagram in a deal worth around $1 billion.

US women overcome sloppy play, beat Croatia 81-56

LONDON (AP) ? The U.S. women's team threw the ball away and struggled from the field. This was one sloppy performance for an Olympic opener.

It also was another victory.

Maybe it was first-game nerves or a hangover from the opening ceremony, but the U.S. didn't look like the powerhouse expected to dominate the London Games until the fourth quarter ? when it pulled away for an 81-56 victory over Croatia.

"It's just one game, one day," U.S. guard Sue Bird said. "You have to come to play that day, if you don't anything can happen."

The Americans just beat Croatia by 54 on July 21. Easy victories are expected from this team, which has won 34 straight Olympic contests and four consecutive gold medals.

That didn't happen Saturday.

"There was a little jitters, probably a little sluggishness," Bird said. "For the most part we didn't finish off plays we normally finish off. We allowed a team that when they get going are known to spread out the floor and try to hit as many 3s as they can, stay with us."

Coming into the Olympics, coach Geno Auriemma said he was hoping the Americans could play a style of basketball that would be entertaining and help grow the women's game internationally.

That was certainly not the case at the start of this one.

Despite missing its first 14 shots, Croatia hung tough for the first 30 minutes before the Americans finally pulled away.

"We have five players who have never been in the Olympics before so they are going to be nervous. Everybody was a little nervous," Auriemma said. "We're better than we showed, but I don't know that we're going to be great right off the bat."

The U.S., which has dominated its opponents en route to the last four gold medals, led 53-49 early in the fourth quarter before a 16-0 run put the game out of reach.

Angel McCoughtry started the burst with consecutive layups and Tamika Catchings capped it with a three-point play that made it 69-49. Swin Cash also had a three-point play in the spurt.

McCoughtry finished with 13 points for the U.S., which got back to its hotel at 3 a.m. after Friday's opening ceremony. Tina Charles had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Candace Parker finished with 11 points and 13 boards.

"We know we can play better and will," Parker said.

Jelena Ivezic scored 22 points and Marija Vrsaljko added 19 for Croatia, which was making its Olympic debut. Vrsaljko missed the previous matchup last Saturday as she was getting married.

While the Americans imposed their will on offense in that contest, they struggled Saturday.

The U.S. built a 9-0 lead as Croatia missed its first 14 shots. The Americans could have been up a lot more, but missed a lot of easy shots and turned the ball over. They finished with 21 turnovers.

"Defensively we were great in the first quarter, we were running, blocking shots just couldn't score and that hurts," Parker said. "When you look up at the scoreboard at end of first and it's 9-4, it's deflating. We just have to do better than that."

Actually it was 11-4, but Parker is correct ? they will have to play better.

Vrsaljko finally got the Croatians on the board with a lay-in with 2 minutes left in the first quarter. The U.S. built its lead to 21-9 and looked poised to take command before going cold from the floor.

Croatia scored the next 14 points, capped by Luca Ivankovic's lay-in that gave the team its first lead of the game. Ivezic's 3 minutes later made it 26-23.

Diana Taurasi had seen enough, hitting consecutive 3s to restore the Americans' advantage. The U.S. led 31-28 at the half.

"We played very well for 30, 32 minutes," Croatia coach Stipe Bralic. "We played smart and we played good defense. But we played against maybe the best women's team ever. They got 27 second-chance points and that shows you how strong they are."

It was the second straight Olympics that the Americans struggled in their opener. They trailed the Czech Republic 13-2 before winning by 40 at the Beijing Games.

The U.S. men's basketball team, who is also a heavy favorite to win the gold, didn't make the women's opener. It had practice at the same time. The two teams marched together in the opening ceremonies and are staying in the same hotel.

Next up for the U.S. is Angola, which lost to Turkey 72-50 in its Olympic debut. The Americans also will face China, Turkey and the Czech Republic in pool play. The U.S. beat the Czechs in the finals of the 2010 world championship to qualify for the London Games.

The Czech Republic lost its pool opener, falling to China 66-57. Also Saturday, Russia rallied past Canada 58-53, France beat Brazil 73-58, and Australia routed host Britain 74-58.

Al Gore invokes Kochs in plutocratic fundraising plea for DCCC - Washington Examiner

Al Gore, former vice president and environmentalist jet-setter extraordinaire, released a desperate fundraising plea to help his fellow Nobel Laureate and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Where to start? ?The last thing we want is the Republican Party ? a? party that?s been hijacked by an extremist fringe ? to win the White House and tighten its grip on Congress,? Gore wrote. ?Extremist fringe? ? that?s the phrase used by the man who compared global warming skeptics to the racists of an earlier generation. ?[S]lowly the conversation was won,? Gore said last year. ?And we still have racism, God knows, but it?s so different now and so much better. And we have to win the conversation on climate.?

Moving on, he warned that Republican victory ?would spell disaster for our economy and our environment.? Gore, like all good environmentalists, supports the carbon cap-and-trade policy that would kill 3 million manufacturing jobs by 2029 ? according to the Heritage Foundation ? and cost $4.8 trillion in lost economic growth.

Gore might think that cap-and-trade is good for the economy because he has made tens of millions of dollars as an environmentalist since leaving office and would have made another fortune if the legislation had passed in the 111th Congress.

?Karl Rove and the ultra-conservative Koch brothers are pouring millions of dollars into this campaign,? Gore warned. ?Democrats are depending on the individual support we get from people like you.?

Gore requested a $3 donation from all those individual supporters before acknowledging that the Democrats have some big money supporters of their own.

?This deadline is so important that a group of Democrats have agreed to match your contribution 2-1, tripling your impact,? he says. Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., often suggests that the Democrat/Republican divide this year is a divide between democracy and plutocracy. Presumably, though, she approves of this fundraising tactic.

No word in the Gore email, though, about whether the wealthy Democratic backers will cut one big check or match the donations in $3 increments, in order to keep the amount of the average donation low.

PKF - New tax relief unlikely to boost North Sea gas investment

25 July 2012: A new tax relief being introduced by the Treasury to support investment in North Sea gas is unlikely to encourage additional exploration in the area, according to PKF Accountants & business advisers.

The Government earlier announced an allowance for large shallow-water gas fields under which the first ?500m of income from qualifying fields will be protected from the 32 per cent Supplementary Charge (SC) tax rate.

Jeff Harris, co-head of PKF?s Natural Resources team, said: ?Whilst we welcome any effort on the part of the Treasury to stimulate continued exploration and development of energy in the North Sea - particularly when independent forecasters have announced that they expect to see a continuing significant reduction in production of the next few years - the measures announced today are very much at the margins. They are unlikely to play any significant part in stimulating the significant spend necessary to discover and bring new fields into production.

?Indeed, the Treasury states that this measure will only cost ?20 million a year, so it must believe that very few fields will qualify and that those that do will generate protected revenue over a significantly long period. As a result, this isn?t going to do much to assist with development expenditure in the short term.?

Bagram's lost boys still live in US prison's shadow

During some sleepless nights when his stark bedroom walls remind him too much of his old prison cell in Afghanistan, Jan Sher Khan scans Internet dating sites he had heard about from U.S. soldiers who once guarded him.

The 24-year-old Pakistani never contacts anyone on the dating sites. He does not know how he would tell them he spent more than six years in the U.S. military prison of Bagram after being detained as a 16-year-old and accused of being a suicide bomber.

More than 2,500 juveniles have been detained in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay by the United States since 2001, according to a U.N. report.

'No proof, nothing'
Most, like Khan, are now free, but many are struggling to rebuild their shattered lives.

"Sometimes I feel like I'm still in prison," said Khan, who, like all foreign prisoners at Bagram, was never charged with a crime.

"They put me in jail for six years. No proof, nothing. I spent my youth behind bars," he said, adding that he and other young detainees were beaten repeatedly during the first few months of their detention.

Slideshow: Afghanistan: Nation at a crossroads (on this page)

An American court found two adult detainees had been beaten to death at Bagram in 2002, using techniques similar to those described by Khan.

The U.S. government said such cases of abuse are rare.

"Although there have been substantiated cases of abuse in the past, for which U.S. service members have been held accountable, our enemies also have employed a deliberate campaign of exaggerations and fabrications," said Lt. Col. Todd Breasseale, a spokesman for the Department of Defense in Washington.

"All credible allegations of abuse are thoroughly investigated, and appropriate disciplinary action is taken when those allegations are substantiated," said Breasseale.

U.S. officials in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Washington, contacted by Reuters, all declined to discuss individual cases of Bagram detainees.

Mood swings, headaches
Reuters could not independently verify some aspects of the accounts provided by the detainees interviewed for this story. Journalists are not permitted inside Bagram.

Khan said the abuse he suffered inside Bagram has left him with frequent headaches and mood swings. He said he can no longer concentrate for more than a few minutes.

Khan is seeing a Pakistani army psychologist but his problems and the stigma of being labeled a "terrorist" because of his time in Bagram make it difficult to rebuild his life -- to find a job and eventually a wife.

"All my friends are married. Some have kids. We are not really close any more," said Khan, who wants to marry but fears no woman will have him.

No trials
Foreign prisoners at Bagram have no trials, only review boards staffed by U.S. military officers.

Prisoners do not have the right to see classified evidence against them and are represented by a U.S. military officer, not a civilian lawyer. The boards evaluate evidence against them and whether they might pose a future threat to U.S. forces.

The process falls "severely short of fair trial standards," said Sarah Belal from Justice Project Pakistan, which has filed a case in Pakistan on behalf of some of the families.

Slideshow: Life goes on in Guantanamo (on this page)

The U.S. government says detention is necessary to stop released prisoners from returning to the battlefield. Some have done so, it says.

"Detention in wartime has long been recognized as legitimate under international law. Just as we do with prisoners of war in more traditional armed conflicts, we acknowledge that the threat they pose may change over time," said Breasseale.

A case filed in the United States three years ago by the International Justice Network is challenging the U.S. right to hold foreign prisoners captured abroad indefinitely in Bagram.

Full international coverage from NBCNews.com

Khan said he was told for more than two years that the military review boards were willing to let him go but were waiting for a response from the Pakistani government.

The Pakistani government said they always responded promptly to requests from the United States.

Belal is working on a case in Pakistan to force the Pakistani government to do more to bring its citizens home from Bagram.

Afghan activists step into social media war

Childhoods lost
Khan said he ran away from home as a teenager to escape beatings from his strict military father, who disapproved of his poor grades, his friends and his drinking and smoking.

He said he went to Afghanistan to find a job because he had read about U.S.-funded construction projects there in the news.

But within a week, he said, he was arrested after Afghans made up accusations against him to collect cash for a tip-off.

He said he spent the next six months being beaten by interrogators every few days. Sometimes he was shackled to a chair, other times hung from the ceiling by his ankles.

"Everyone got the treatment. It was just -- is it going to be for one month or for six months?" Khan recalled. "They asked me stupid questions, like 'where is Osama bin Laden?'. I said, 'I'm 16. You think he is going to meet me?'"

More coverage about Afghanistan on NBCNews.com

Khan was eventually moved from his single cell to the general prison population and the beatings stopped. He was freed last year. A Red Cross spokesman confirmed the organization flew him back to his hometown of Peshawar in Pakistan.

Local Pakistani security services are now frequent callers at his parents' house. Neighbors shun him. No one wants trouble with the intelligence services.

'I was innocent. ... I lost everything'
Pakistani Kamil Shah said he was detained in 2004 at the age of 16, shortly after crossing the Afghanistan/Pakistan border with a sick friend needing medical help. He was held for five years in Bagram, without charge, until his release in 2009.

"They said I was a Talib. They said you will be here forever," he said down a crackly phone line from northern Pakistan. Khan confirmed Shah was in Bagram when he was there.

Shah also said he was eventually freed after he learned enough English to speak directly to his U.S. interrogators and convince them he was telling the truth.

U.S. soldiers also told him several times they were willing to release him but were awaiting a response from Pakistan, he said.

Slideshow: Pakistan: A nation in turmoil (on this page)

"I was innocent. I lost my education. I lost everything," said Shah, who had three years until his high school graduation when he was detained.

Shah said he was beaten in the first months of detention.

"Clearly in the early days there was ongoing torture at Bagram," said Andrea Prasow, a senior counter terrorism counsel from the New York-based Human Rights Watch. But the situation had improved, she said.

"Since detainees were moved to a new prison by the Obama administration (in late 2009), we haven't heard credible accusations of mistreatment at that level."

Conditions at Bagram are monitored by the International Committee of the Red Cross. But their reports are not public.

"The ICRC ... shares its concern according to international law with the detaining authorities," said Robin Waudo, the organization's Kabul-based spokesman.

Uncertain future
U.S. officials say no decision has yet been reached on what will happen to the 50-plus foreign prisoners in Bagram, half of them Pakistani, when the United States hands full control of the prison to the Afghan government in September.

Pakistani government court documents lodged in Lahore High Court and dated December 2011 say there are still three juveniles inside Bagram, one aged 15 and two aged 16.

An adult and the 15-year-old, Mohammad Tayyab, though cleared for release by both the United States and Pakistan, are still being held because they have no exit visas, a Pakistani government official said.

U.S. authorities say they are aware of only one juvenile prisoner, aged 17, and no child prisoners.

Some prisoners, like Hamidullah Khan, were arrested as children and have grown up behind bars.

A photo of a young, dimpled Hamidullah grins down from a wall of a stuffy concrete room in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city. It's the last photo taken before he disappeared on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He was 14 years old.

In Pakistan, 'Old Glory' is flammable - and profitable

Hamidullah vanished in 2008 after his father sent him to collect the family's belongings from their village near the border. On his way home he telephoned from a bus stop, but the next thing his family knew, he was in Bagram.

A Pakistani government memo says he was captured in Khost province in Afghanistan for "attacks on coalition forces" but gives no details.

"Why don't they tell us what he has done?" asked his father Wakeel Khan, a former soldier now barely making a living as a security guard. "If he is guilty, I will kill him myself," he said gruffly, as his other sons silently looked on.

More than 300 children were recruited as fighters in Afghanistan in 2011, according to a U.N. report on children and armed conflict. The youngest was an 8-year-old girl. But Hamidullah's family say he had no interest in the insurgency.

Afghan minister survives assassination attempt

The Red Cross recently set up monthly video calls between Hamidullah and his family. If he mentions conditions in Bagram or his arrest, the lines are cut.

While Hamidullah has been detained, his mother Din Rozen has been fasting from sunrise to sunset, believing her suffering strengthens her prayers for her son to come home before she loses her sight due to cataracts.

"He's my child ... Who is taking care of him now?," cried Din Rozen, using her headscarf to dab away tears.

Wet climate may have fueled Mongol invasion

Beginning in the 13th century, the Mongol Empire spread across Asia and into the Middle East like wildfire, growing into the largest contiguous land empire the world has ever seen.

Historians have long speculated that periods of drought pushed the Mongol hordes to conquer their neighbors, but preliminary new findings suggest that theory may be exactly backward. Instead, consistent rain and warm temperatures may have given the Mongols the energy source they needed to conquer Eurasia: grass for their horses.

This idea, bolstered by the discovery of tree rings that preserve a climate history of Mongolia back to the year 657, is still in the preliminary stages of investigation. LiveScience spoke with Amy Hessl, the dendochronologist, or tree-ring researcher, who along with collaborators Neil Pederson and Baatarbileg Nachin first discovered the preserved trees hinting at the weather during the era of the Mongols.

LiveScience: How did you find the trees that held the Mongolian climate record?

Hessl: We were funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Geographic Society a few years ago to look at how climate change is impacting wildfire activity in Mongolia. So we had driven by this lava flow that looked reminiscent of other places I know of in the American West that have really long climate records from tree rings. The trees growing on these dry, exposed sites tend to grow until they're really old. And then once they die, the wood decays slowly. It allows you to reconstruct environmental conditions going back a very long time.

We drove by this lava flow, and I was like, "Whoa, that looks like an ideal place." So we went back, and even when we did sample, we didn't think we had anything that great. We were just throwing these pieces of wood back and forth to each other, like, "Oh, we'll make this one into coffee table art." We weren't taking it real seriously.

LiveScience: How did you realize that you'd found something important?

Hessl: I gave them to my colleague Neil Pederson [of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory]. He didn't look at them for months, until finally he didn't have anything else to do, so he started to date them. I started getting these texts from him on a Friday night and he was like, "I'm back to the 1200s."

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Tale of the Elvis mouse: Why can't you be true?

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: A British artist?s plan to create a mouse with Elvis Presley?s DNA has set websites buzzing over the past week, but right now it?s no more than an art-show concept.

    2. Why the 2012 Sumatra quake was a weird one
    3. Long jumping for gold means aiming high
    4. France's radium craze still haunts Paris

Finally, I get this text that just had three numbers on it, 657. I was like, "What was that, does he want me to call him at 6:57 in the morning?" It turned out to be the date of the oldest, most inner ring, 657 C.E.

There are certainly other tree-ring records that go back much farther, but this is special for Mongolia because it clearly covers the period of the rise of [Mongol Emperor] Genghis Khan. [Fight, Fight, Fight: The History of Human Aggression]

LiveScience: How can tree rings tell you what the past climate was like?

Hessl: These trees are growing on this lava, and there's very little soil development, so they're really, really water-stressed. When the tree rings are narrow, that tells you that during its growing season there was very little water available. The bigger the rings, the wetter it was.

LiveScience: What sort of climate patterns did you see as the Mongol Empire arose?

Hessl: It's very preliminary, but in the couple of trees we have in that time period we can see that the rings are not only wide, but they're consistently wide for the time that overlaps with the rise of Genghis Khan.

Our inference there is that this would have been an ideal time for high grassland productivity on the steppe, and that maybe translated into more livestock, especially horses for the Mongols.

To put it in perspective, each Mongol warrior had 10 horses at his disposal. Just right there, that's a huge amount of biomass that is required. In addition to that, when the Mongols expanded their range in their traveling and marauding, they brought with them large numbers of livestock that they used to feed themselves. Their whole military operation was basically predicated on the fact that they had large numbers of grazing animals. These climate conditions would have given them more energy to fuel their empires. [Top 10 Ways Weather Changed History]

LiveScience: What happened later on during the Mongol era?

Hessl: There's a well-known cold period that occurred after a volcanic eruption in 1258, and we can see this plunge into cold, dry conditions in Mongolia. At that same time, right around 1260, the Mongols moved their capital city out of the steppe and into Beijing, and we think it's possible that was related as well. We have a historian, Nicola DiCosmo of the Institute for Advanced Study, we're working with who is going to go back through all of the Chinese documents, Mongolian records and European accounts to try to see if there's information that would corroborate our findings or not.

LiveScience: Are you going back to Mongolia?

Hessl: I'm leaving in a week, actually! We're going to go back to the same lava flow and collect additional samples because we didn't really put our hearts into it the first time. We were only there for a few hours.

We've also identified some other lava fields in Mongolia that we think may have a similar ecological setting. We're also collaborating with some other people. One is Avery Cook Shinneman of the University of Washington, who studies lake sediments. She's going to be taking cores out of lakes in the Orkhon Valley, the seat of the Mongol Empire, looking for a little fungal spore that lives in livestock feces. What we're hoping is that we can get some general numbers and density of the livestock around these lakes going back in time.

LiveScience: What do you find interesting about linking past climate to history like this?

Hessl: It's fascinating to think about the energy sources that previous civilizations were dependent on, and when those energy sources were abundant how those societies responded, and when those energy sources evaporated, how did they adapt to that?

Society today is dealing with major threats to our primary energy source, so it's fascinating to me to look back on these earlier civilizations to see them going through the same transitions. It just puts our current situation in perspective.

New Jersey boy dies after sand collapses at beach

By NBCNewYork.com

UPDATED, 1 a.m. ET:?Police say a boy who was rushed to the hospital Tuesday after a sand tunnel collapsed over him at a beach in Long Branch, N.J., has died.

The 12-year-old, who has not been identified, was not breathing when he was pulled out of the sand late Tuesday afternoon, officials said. Lifeguards administered CPR on him, and he was taken to Monmouth Medical Center where he was placed in pediatric intensive care unit.

For more visit NBCNewYork.com.

Witnesses at the beach said blood was coming out of the boy's nose when lifeguards were working on him.?

Someone screamed for help from lifeguards, who were just 15 feet away, said Roebuck. The boy was pulled out, and lifeguards performed CPR on him as they waited for paramedics.

A beachgoer from Staten Island, N.Y., said the boy wasn't moving.

"They were pumping him, pressing on his stomach, trying to bring him back," she said. "They kept trying to revive him, pressing, pressing. There was blood coming out of his nose... He didn't move."?

Sources said the tunnel was deep, and the weight of all the sand on the boy's chest made it impossible for him to breathe.

The boy was rushed to Monmouth Medical Center, where he was taken to the pediatric intensive care unit.?

The boy is from Oakhurst, sources said, but his name is being withheld.

Authorities said a fire truck responding to the scene hit a man holding his infant son. The truck hit the pair as it pulled into Ocean Place near the beach, knocking them both to the ground.?

Both were taken to the Jersey Shore Medical Center. The father suffered some broken limbs. The baby was injured but not severely.?

The firefighter driving the truck was working his last shift before his retirement, officials said.

Bankruptcy Proceeding Involving Lower Sioux Indian Community ...

The opinion in Bucher v. Dakota Finance Corp; Dietz v. Lower Sioux Indian Community; Bucher v. Lower Sioux Indian Community (B.A.P. 8th Cir) is here.

The issue here is whether the filing of bankruptcy by Tribe members serves to make the debtors? ongoing revenues from the Tribe available to the respective trustees for the benefit of their creditors. The Bankruptcy Court1 held that both the Tribe and Dakota Finance Corporation are protected by sovereign immunity and dismissed the adversaries as to those parties. The trustees appeal. For the reasons that follow, we affirm.

New Post: iOS/Android Performance

Does anyone out there have a few minutes to test my develop3d branch?

https://github.com/SickheadGames/MonoGame/tree/mgfx

In that branch I have a major refactor of how OpenGL state is being applied.?

The old, useless, and broken GLStateManager is out.

The new GraphicsDevice.ApplyState() is in.

What it does is defer all state changes until a draw() method is called... naturally resulting in a huge reduction in unnecessary state changes and GL calls.?

We saw it give us a few more FPS on a graphics intensive game on an iPad.? It would be good to see what results others get.

Also we've not tested this on Android at all...? it would be good to know if it works correctly at all as well as any performance improvement you see.

If all goes well we should be merging this into develop3d later this week.? Thanks!

Syria regime officials killed in Damascus attack

BEIRUT (AP) ? A suicide bomber struck the National Security building in the Syrian capital Wednesday, killing the defense minister and President Bashar Assad's brother-in-law ? the harshest blow to the Syrian regime since the uprising began.

Syrian state-run TV said the blast came during a meeting of Cabinet ministers and senior security officials in Damascus, where four straight days of clashes pitting government troops against rebels have sent tensions soaring.

Defense Minister Dawoud Rajha, 65, a former army general, was the most senior government official to be killed in the Syrian civil war as rebels battle to oust Assad. Gen. Assef Shawkat, the deputy defense minister and one of the most feared figures in Assad's inner circle, also was killed. He was married to Assad's older sister, Bushra.

Interior Minister Mohammed Shaar was wounded and in stable condition, state TV said.

Republican Guard troops surrounded the nearby al-Shami Hospital, where some officials were taken for treatment, witnesses said.

The Assad family has ruled Syria for four decades, creating an ironclad and impenetrable regime. Wednesday's attack was a nearly unheard-of strike on the inner circle.

Although it was unclear who was behind the attack, the high-level assassinations could signal a turning point in the 16-month conflict as the violence becomes increasingly chaotic.

Besides a government crackdown, rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several massive suicide attacks this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the fray.

Activists say more than 17,000 people have died since the uprising began in March 2011.

The Syrian army released a statement saying its forces will continue to fight.

"Whoever thinks that by targeting the country's leaders they will be able to twist Syria's arm is disillusioned because Syria's people, army and leadership are now more determined than ever to fight terrorism ... and cleanse the nation from the armed gangs."

Rajha was the most senior Christian government official in Syria. Assad appointed him to the post last year. His death will resonate with Syria's minority Christian population, who make up about 10 percent of Syria's population and have generally stood by the regime.

Christians say they are particularly vulnerable to the violence sweeping the country of 22 million people, and they are fearful that Syria will become another Iraq, with Christians caught in the crossfire between rival Muslim groups.

The blast came on the same day the U.N. Security Council was scheduled to vote on a new resolution aimed at pressuring the Syrian regime to comply with a peace plan.

But Russia remained at loggerheads with the U.S. and its European allies over any mention of sanctions and Chapter 7 of the U.N. charter, which could eventually allow the use of force to end the conflict in Syria.

The state-run news agency SANA reported that Wednesday's blast was aimed at the National Security building, a headquarters for one of Syria's intelligence branches and less than 500 meters (yards) from the U.S. Embassy.

Police had cordoned off the area, and journalists were banned from approaching the site.

Earlier Wednesday, SANA said soldiers were chasing rebels in the Midan neighborhood, causing "great losses among them." The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said army helicopters attacked the neighborhoods of Qaboun and Barzeh.

Diplomacy so far has failed to stop the bloodshed, and there appeared to be little hope that the U.N.'s most powerful body would unite behind a plan.

The key stumbling block is the Western demand for a resolution threatening non-military sanctions and tied to Chapter 7 of the United Nations Charter, which could eventually allow the use of force to end the conflict in Syria.

Russia is adamantly opposed to any mention of sanctions or Chapter 7. After Security Council consultations late Tuesday on a revised draft resolution pushed by Moscow, Russia's deputy U.N. ambassador Alexander Pankin said these remain "red lines."

Russia has said it will veto any Chapter 7 resolution, but council diplomats said there is still a possibility of last-minute negotiations.

Ex-Penn State president's attorneys blast report

The statue of former Penn State University head football coach Joe Paterno stands outside Beaver Stadium in State College, Pa., Friday, July 13, 2012. After an eight-month inquiry, former FBI director Louis Freeh's firm produced a 267-page report that concluded that Paterno and other top Penn State officials hushed up child sex abuse allegations against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky for more than a decade for fear of bad publicity, allowing Sandusky to prey on other youngsters. The revelations contained in the report have stirred a debate over whether the statue should remain. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar)

The revelations contained in the report have stirred a debate over whether the statue should remain. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar)

Attorneys for ousted Penn State president Graham Spanier (SPAN'-yer) say a report released last week on the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal "contained numerous inaccuracies and reached conclusions that are not supported by the data."

The report by former FBI director Louis Freeh (LOO'-ee free) concluded Spanier and other top Penn State officials concealed Sandusky's abuse of children to shield the university from bad publicity.

Attorneys Elizabeth Ainslie and Peter Vaira said Monday that Freeh "unfairly offered up" their client and others "to those insisting upon a finding of culpability at the highest level of the university."

The attorneys say Spanier is looking forward to the opportunity to "set the record straight."

Freeh says Penn State officials exhibited "callous and shocking" disregard for child victims.

Sandusky was convicted of abusing 10 boys. He has maintained his innocence.

Sports as a Religious Legacy

When Olympic season appears on the horizon, I tend to recall how I was a disappointment to my parents. Well, only on one account but it was significant: I was not athletically inclined.

My parents were my mother and grandmother, and they loved sports. My Grandma graduated from BYU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. She was one of the first white women to hike across the Grand Canyon from the North to the South Rim. She taught PE at Farrer Junior High School, where her students won the posture parade at State competitions. While raising her own children, she taught tap dance and square dance. My mother was a high school badminton champion and a guard on the basketball team. She played volleyball through her twenties with a city league. She led hikes for guests at our ancestral summer home. As an elementary school teacher, she required her students to learn the monkey bars, jump rope, and shoot baskets. Both women loved to watch sports.

They took me to football and basketball games; I brought my book along. Fans sitting near us didn?t appreciate my reading through games. My grandma died twelve years ago, and I haven?t heard her watch a football game for twenty-five years, but I still can conjure precisely those guttural tones she used when encouraging her favorite team on to better defense, ?Get him!? Her last major purchase was a large television, to watch the 1998 winter Olympics.

Recently, while trying to figure out what the early creators of LDS Girls? Camp were trying to accomplish, I came across the name of Ann M. Cannon. Cannon served on the Young Women?s General Board for 40 years. She created the Beehive program. This title is something of a red herring, because now ?Beehive? refers to the organization for 12-14 year old girls. But the Beehive program was originally for girls 14 and up, even into their twenties. The Beehive Program was forerunner both to the Campcrafter program?the LDS female equivalent of earning an Eagle Scout?and the Personal Progress Program. Cannon was also on the Deseret Gym Board. Eventually, I realized that Ann M. Cannon was Aunt Annie. My Grandma had married Cannon?s nephew.

This realization, and study of the period, changed my conception of women and sports in our family. Sports were a legacy of the utopian impulse of 19th and 20th century Latter-day Saints. LDS theologies of embodiment teach that bodies are a gift, that people have a mandate to care for their bodies, and that resurrection is literal and physical. Latter-day Saints share with many other religious traditions a belief that physical health impacts spiritual health.

This theological foundation led early Saints to view Church participation in a holistic way, seeking to flourish physically as well as spiritually. For example, Brigham Young installed a gymnasium in his home for his daughters and sons to exercise. In 1910, the Church completed the Deseret Gym with female-only exercise days to insure women had full access to the facilities and participation in all events. As religious groups in the United States began to see the potential of sports for attracting young people to the congregations, so did Latter-day Saints. Basketball became central to the programs for young men, and, beginning in the early twentieth century, Church architects designed meeting houses with gymnasiums. A 1952-1953 Young Women Mutual Improvement Association (YWMIA) manual suggested that women in wards form teams and compete against other wards in volleyball, softball, ten?nis, badminton, kickball, shuffleboard, or table tennis. In addition to physical well-being, organized sports would encourage good sportsmanship and friendships, facilitating a sense of belonging among players.

All-Church competitions such as softball, basketball, volleyball, and dance ended in 1971. The main reason for localizing these activities was the expense and travel involved in such tournaments for a rapidly growing Church. But overly aggressive competitors and fans also concerned many Church leaders and participants. Many Church-sponsored regular athletic events gradually died out. However, this process has reversed since 2004, when the First Presidency sent a letter to local leaders throughout the world encouraging stakes to develop drama, dance, music, speech, sports, and visual arts programs to foster unity and friendships among young people.

Now I cheer on my nine-year old daughter, who has taken up basketball and likes to watch football games with my mother. And I try to discover what my seven-year-old might like. She has put her foot down against gymnastics. She says if she were to play basketball, she would spend the whole game worrying that a ball would hit her on the head, adversely affecting the quality of her participation. I wonder what Aunt Annie would recommend for her. From the first Beehive manual in 1915, Aunt Annie and her committee invited young women to earn health medals by playing games for 15 hours a month (relays, hide and seek, fox and hounds, tennis, gold volley ball, etc.), swimming, boating, skating, snoeshowing, horseback riding, bicycle riding, and dancing. My daughter likes to climb rocks, so maybe I will watch her learn to scale a wall and recall the 1930s image I have of my twenty-year-old grandma, blistered, dehydrated, and climbing out of Grand Canyon?s South Rim in search of aid for her hiking companion.
