On the path to age-defying therapies

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? One of the secrets to a longer, healthier life is simply to eat less. When subjected to calorie restriction (CR), typically defined as a 20-40% reduction in caloric intake with corresponding maintenance of proper nutrition, animals in labs not only live longer, but also have improved insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, both of which decline during aging.

Yet, for all of its benefits, CR's restricted diet is a stumbling block for most Americans. If only we had a drug that could do the same thing.

Well, we do, sort of. The drug rapamycin, which is used for immunosuppression in organ transplantations, mimics the longevity effects of CR and may tap into the same cellular pathway as CR. Unlike CR, however, rapamycin actually impairs glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, two hallmarks of diabetes. Clearly, rapamycin is doing something CR is not.

To understand better rapamycin's benefits and risks, researchers from the lab of Whitehead Institute Member David Sabatini and Joseph Baur, assistant professor of Physiology, at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine, have discovered precisely how rapamycin is behaving at the cellular level. Their intriguing results are published this week in the journal Science.

"We know that despite its adverse effects, rapamycin still prolongs lifespan, so there's a potential that we could make it better by just having lifespan affected and not induce the adverse effects," says Sabatini, who is a professor of biology at MIT and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator. "The data in this paper suggest that it's possible."

Rapamycin, which is also called sirolimus and marketed in the United States as Rapamune, is a known inhibitor of the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1), a protein complex that regulates many cellular processes linked to growth and differentiation. mTORC1 is part of a cellular signaling pathway, called mTOR, which responds to nutrients and growth factors. Mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 2 (mTORC2) is also part of the mTOR pathway and regulates insulin signaling.

Rapamycin has generally been thought to target primarily mTORC1. But work by Dudley Lamming and Lan Ye, co-authors of the Science paper and postdoctoral fellows in the Sabatini and Baur labs respectively, indicates that in mice, rapamycin also inhibits mTORC2, thereby reducing insulin sensitivity.

To see if rapamycin's positive effects on lifespan effects could be separated from its negative metabolic effects, Lamming and Ye bred mice whose mTORC1 activity was partially inhibited but whose mTORC2 activity remained largely intact. The females of this mouse population lived longer than control mice while maintaining normal insulin sensitivity.

"This shows that disrupting mTORC1 alone is capable of extending lifespan, if you can find a way do that," says Lamming.

For Baur, the experiments' results indicate that there is a possibility of identifying a better anti-aging drug than rapamycin.

"Our work highlights the potential utility of molecules that target mTORC1 specifically and suggests there is hope that by targeting this pathway, you could really get something that ameloriates age-related diseases without causing more problems than it solves," says Baur. "If you're taking an anti-aging drug as a preventive measure, you probably don't want to pay the price of diabetes."

This work was supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the American Federation of Aging Research (AFAR), the Institute on Aging at the University of Pennsylvania, the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, the American Heart Association, and the Academy of Finland.

Jessica Simpson's naked Elle cover censored

Hearst Magazines via Reuters

By Us Weekly

Not everyone is raving about Jessica Simpson's naked, pregnant body on the cover of April's ELLE magazine -- including some customers at a Safeway supermarket in Tuscon, Ariz.

Photos from Us: Nude pregnant celebs

The attention-grabbbing cover image, in which the 31-year-old star barely conceals her naked form, has been covered up with pieces of cardboard or simply turned around, the Arizona Daily star reports.

A spokeswoman for the grocery chain said it made the move to censor the cover following "multiple complaints" about the "Fashion Star" mentor's photo.

The singer said in a recent interview that that Demi Moore-aping pic was all her idea.

"They didn't even ask me to do that," she said on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show. "It was my idea. It kind of just seemed a natural thing for me to do."

"I'm like 170 pounds and I wanted to pose nude," she explained. "I try to be like 110 pounds. It's funny to be at your heaviest and feel the most confident. I just take such pride in being a mom! I just love my body more than ever now."

The Fantastic Diverse Architecture of the University of Leeds

Currently the fourth biggest university in the UK, University of Leeds has a campus as diverse and fascinating architecturally as the students who occupy them, ranging from gothic revivalist to post-modern. Let's have a little tour, shall we?

Photos by samwise_camus

Though not itself an officially chartered university until 1904, some of its older buildings were in fact part of Victoria University, an 1887 conglomeration of colleges from Manchester, Liverpool, and Leeds serving as Northern England?s sole university. After the Manchester and Liverpool campuses separated into individual institutions, Leeds was granted the charter in 1904 and became a university in its own right. Nowadays Leeds can boast a population of over 33,000 students and one of the most diverse campuses architecturally in the country, with buildings ranging from gothic revival to art deco, brutalist to post-modern.

The Union is the center of student activity on campus with a constant flow of people. During the summer months bunting is often hung across the main avenue, giving university life the feel of a festival. There are now also weekly farmer?s markets selling local produce, which have proved immensely popular.

Photos by samwise_camus

The timing of my campus Lomowalk coincided with the student council elections, where students vote for the candidates they feel will best represent their views in the running of the Union. As a result, walls were plastered with vibrant photos perfect for slide film?s vivid colors. Prospective candidates could be seen wandering campus, some in interesting outfits, drumming up support for themselves.

Photos by samwise_camus

As said above, the style of buildings on the campus is incredibly varied, with certain regions being of a particular style based on the time of their construction. The Law buildings, being the newest, have a very sleek modern design to them, some more reminiscent of old sci-fi series.

Of the post-modern buildings, they range from the shiny snaking glass of the Arnold & Marjorie Ziff Building (believe it or not the photo below is NOT of a rollercoaster on its side)?

?to these controversial concrete constructions, representative of the brutalist architectural movement ? the Roger Stevens building, and the surrounding science departments.

Photos by samwise_camus

But the real charm of the campus comes in the form of its original buildings, which bring a much-needed dash of grandeur to proceedings. The Business School is housed inside this incredible gothic hall on the edge of campus. Deeper into campus can be found the Great Hall, one of the original buildings from the 1880s. Statistically, every student that has ever walked into the Great Hall has around an 80 to 90% chance of making a Hogwarts joke.* And just a short way away is the strong spire of the Emmanuel Centre, appropriately built inside a church.

Photos by samwise_camus

The crowning glory of the university is the Parkinson Building, with its white gleaming tower visible from all around campus and much of the surrounding city. Built as a facade for the red brick of the Brotherton Library and named after one of the university?s most prominent old benefactors, it truly is a beautiful building to behold. Rumors that the Chancellor lives in a room at the top of the tower have yet to be verified.

Photos by samwise_camus

So there you have the University of Leeds in all its glory. Many of the old buildings are open to the public, so why not come visit for yourself? And be sure to bring a camera!

*Not forgetting, of course, that statistically 50% of statistics are made up on the spot for the sake of humor.

Pope visits heart of conservative Catholic Mexico

SILAO, Mexico (AP) ? The last time a pope visited Mexico, more than 1 million believers cheered and wept in the streets of the capital. Aztec dancers shook rattles and blew conch shells inside the cathedral where John Paul II canonized the first Indian saint in the Americas.

It's been a decade since those ecstatic scenes capped the beloved pope's final trip to the country, and his successor arrives Friday to a much more subdued welcome.

Benedict XVI comes to a church battling to extend its political and social gains while overcoming painful setbacks that include legalized abortion and gay marriage in the capital of the most Catholic country in the Spanish-speaking world. It is also a nation grappling with a rampant drug war that has spread fear into once-tranquil regions such as this state of Guanajuato.

"There is a very immense peace that we need in Mexico because of the insecurity," said Marcela Arguello, a 26-year-old housewife who said she plans to join the throngs along the route of the papal motorcade through the city of Leon, the state's largest city.

Mexico has been traumatized by the deaths of more than 47,000 people in drug-related violence in less than six years, and while sunbaked, rolling Guanajuato is far from the major drug trafficking routes, the shadow of the conflict looms even here.

A recent series of apparently gang-related shootings have left some two dozen people dead in the state, which is noted for leather goods, automotive factories and picturesque tourist towns.

Yet even the drug cartels profess to be people of faith. At least 11 banners signed by the pseudo-religious Knights Templar gang were found in five municipalities of Guanajuato last week, including in Leon, offered peace during the papal trip.

But the mass excitement that greeted the past pope seemed to be missing as well.

By Thursday morning, Leon's Metropolitan Park, where officials are prepared for more than 100,000 campers, was empty apart from the usual joggers and families out for a walk.

Preparations were under way, though: City workers were trimming trees and bushes along the motorcade route, bleachers were going up and a truck rolled past Leon's cathedral spraying insecticide to kill any dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

The airwaves were full of public service announcements urging those attending open-air papal events to dress lightly, wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water. A high of 87 degrees Fahrenheit (31 centigrade) was forecast for Friday.

As many as 300,000 people are expected to gather for Mass Sunday, a large turnout even in a state that is 93.8 percent Catholic, the highest in the country. Guanajuato is also a stronghold of President Felipe Calderon's conservative National Action Party, which has roots in militantly Catholic organizations that formed decades ago to challenge an atheistic federal government.

Guanajuato's constitution declares that life begins at conception and bars abortion with extremely limited exceptions. Seven women were jailed there in 2010 for the deaths of their newborns and later released. The women said they had miscarriages, not abortions.

Benedict's church is encouraging more such laws across the nation, reacting partly to the legalization of gay marriage and abortion in Mexico City, the cultural and political center of the country.

At the same time, the nation's church leaders are fighting to overcome their share of the global child sex-abuse scandal, which destroyed the reputation of the most influential Mexican figure in the church.

The Rev. Marcial Maciel founded the Legionaries of Christ order, which John Paul II praised as a model of rectitude. But a series of investigations forced the order to acknowledge in 2010 that Maciel had sexually abused seminarians and fathered three children. Church documents released in a book this week reveal the Vatican had been told of Maciel's drug abuse and pederasty decades ago.

Setbacks such as the legalization of abortion and gay marriage have spurred the church to take a more active role in public life, said Miguel Bedolla, interim dean of Mexican American Catholic College, an institution affiliated with the Archdiocese of San Antonio, Texas.

"The church thrives when it encounters hardship," he said.

Calderon's government is backing legislation that would end a now-oft-ignored restriction on religious observances in public places, as well as a ban on religious participation in politics.

If approved, it could lay the groundwork for laws allowing church ownership of media and openly religious education on school property, said political analyst John Ackerman, of the legal research institute at Mexico's National Autonomous University.

"This opens the door for the church to start using public spaces," Ackerman said. "It has the full intention to be interpreted as occupying public spaces with religious ceremonies, that's what's on the table."

That builds upon the dramatic changes that John Paul II nurtured during his 26-year papacy, which saw Mexican leaders abandon a series of anti-religion laws so restrictive that the pope was technically breaking the law by wearing clerical garb in public on his first trip.

Benedict will meet with Calderon on Saturday, six days before the start of a presidential campaign that could unseat National Action after 12 years in the country's highest office. The church has repeatedly disavowed any political overtones to the pope's trip, and Calderon's office notes that his invitation to Benedict was first sent in 2007.

John Paul, however, made a point of avoiding visits to countries in the throes of election campaigns to not be seen as giving any political message.

Benedict has emphasized the need for Catholic politicians to stay true to their faith in public life. While he was head of the Vatican's doctrine office in 2003, then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger published a set of guidelines reminding Catholic leaders that the church's longheld opposition to abortion, euthanasia and same-sex marriage weren't up for negotiation.

Businesses Move To Web Development For Re-growth

Given that the Internet grew to become ingrained as part of our lifes, both professionally and also home, the necessity for dynamic web development has exploded. So is this growth expected to continue or have in effect we reached the peak? Before the Internet emerged, there were limited choices associated with advertising and raising the your exposure to the buying public. Time honored print was the preferred choice of many given that it delivered a solution cost effective for most, unlike television. Companies including the Yellow Pages and industry driven directories conceived huge business organizations on the backbone of serving this advertising space to the masses and afterwards ensuring it was distributed to the general public. Even though there were no genuine alternate options, this system was rather problematic. There was never any certainty that your advertising would be read, there was clearly no real means of tracking results and once you had sanctioned the art work, there was no adjusting the style or content material material. Furthermore, a heftier investment bought a more expansive advertisement or key positioning, so that the bigger corporations essentially drowned out the rest. Finally came the actual web. To start with it was slow with surfers being required to dial up by way of a modem. The business world took very little note or interest. However with a period of time came technological breakthroughs and access moved to ADSL and afterwards high speed broadband. Already obviously, the world is rolling out super fast fiber optic cables, providing lightning fast upload and download data. Throughout this development, as speeds got faster, the general public as well as the business community began to pay attention. The momentum increased at an amazing pace and today, the world-wide-web has become ingrained within life, both at home and at work. Equipped with such a dominance on what we do, it is actually becoming the fundamental part of our promotion, with companies and sites all eager to be found by probable consumers. This understandably has triggered the huge increase of the Web Development sector, which have designed their skills to understanding and developing the techniques needed rank their own in house and their clients web presence where might possibly have the greatest impression. There's a multitude of features to web development, from building the website to search engine optimization now including the social media, cell phone marketing and beyond. That leads us nicely onto the long term future. Web Development is at an all time high today, but the mobile age is here. More and more of us use mobile phones in order to connect to the Internet, including the smartphone or iPad. Desktop computer usage is undoubtedly declining. This truth is, research forecasts that by 2014, mobile surfing will overhaul personal pc surfing. To answer the question tackled right at the beginning of this post, web development is very much still in it's infancy and will only become more desirable. However, the role will develop and specialize more on mobile solutions and mobile web development. Pets-O-Mania ? Blog Archive ? The Difference Between Cats And ...

posted by Bob B Taylor on Mar 15

Cats and dogs are very different from each other. This is the reason why pet foods like Holistic Select create recipes for each type of pet. This distinction is really evident. It is probably the reason why there are cat people and dog people. All the same, having a pet satisfies us as keepers. Humans needs to feel touch and have a companion is satisfied by having a pet.

Generally, if you are more outgoing, it would be best to get a dog. Dogs are naturally active. Sometimes, a cat can also be active. This is evident from how cats play. Sleep is often a cat?s preferred activity. Sleeping up to 20 hours a day would be normal for a cat. So if you like a more relaxed pet with occasional moments of cuddling, a cat would be perfect for you.

Dogs are a lot more congenial. You would find you dog eager waiting for you behind your door when you get home every day. Cats would tend to keep to themselves. You would do get moments when a cat would approach you and get your attentions for you to pet it and sleep on your lap. Cats have this capability of showing how sweet they are in some moments.

With different activities throughout the day, cats and dogs would have different nutritional needs. This is understood by makers of pet food. Holistic dog food would have higher carbohydrates content rather than cat food. There is higher protein and taurine in cat food. Puppies and kittens would have special pet foods dedicated for them.

When it comes to training, it?s a lot easier to train dogs. They can pick up simple commands rather easily with regular conditioning. Compared to a cat, dogs can easily pick up tricks. You can also train a cat. It involves very little maintenance to take care of cats. The use of the kitty litter alone is part of their instincts.

Your life can change when you have pets. They would teach you a better sense of responsibility. Meeting other people with the same compassion for animals would immediately win you friends. Everyone is aware of how cats and dogs are totally unlike each other. They may even prefer different variety of pet food from Holistic Select. The best thing is: you would have this little furry companion who loves you. Whether you are a cat person or a dog person, having a pet would share the same therapeutic benefits.?

Missouri Young Adults Rank Gas Prices, Poor Economy, and Unemployment as Top Issues

Generation Opportunity grassroots team meets with and listens to young business leaders and small business owners at the St. Louis Business Expo; conducts organizing tour across Missouri college campuses.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) March 16, 2012

Generation Opportunity?s grassroots organizers were actively engaged in the ?Show Me State? this week. The grassroots team met with and listened to a wide range of young adults including those working in the professions and the trades, entrepreneurs, community college and university students, young parents, and others who provided their personal stories on the issues that matter to them. Higher gas prices, the lack of economic opportunity, and historically high youth unemployment were discussed and identified as the top issues impacting young adults across all backgrounds and professions throughout Missouri.

?Surging gas prices, the lack of jobs, and the poor economy were significant issues of concern among young people in Missouri. Young adults who own small businesses, those who work the in professions and in the trades, young mothers, students, and those seeking jobs all raised these issues consistently. Missouri?s young people have real, practical concerns about how they can make ends meet every week because of higher gas prices and even larger concerns about how their lives are being delayed by the poor economy,? said Evan Flores, Director of Field Operations for Generation Opportunity. ?Young people know the status quo is preventing many of them from finding full-time, meaningful work - we are dedicated to using our skills to mobilize our networks and communities to put America back on track.?

Generation Opportunity?s Missouri tour began in St. Louis as the grassroots team joined the 2,500 people who attended the St. Louis Business Expo. The Expo is described as ?the largest business-to-business trade show and conference in the state of Missouri.? The event provided the Generation Opportunity team the chance to talk with local business leaders, small business owners, entrepreneurs, and job seekers about job creation and the need to reinvigorate the private sector. The Expo, which featured more than 100 exhibits, was co-sponsored by companies and organizations such as Charter Business Regions Bank, Innovate St. Louis, Charter Media, US Bank, PNC Bank, Missouri Procurement and Technical Assistance Centers, Stlouisgreen.com, Missouri Procurement Technical Assistance Centers, St. Louis Small Business Monthly, Clarus Communications, Evans & Dixon, the United Way, and AT&T.

Generation Opportunity field organizers then deployed to St. Louis Community College, Harris-Stowe State University, Ranken Technical College, and the University of Missouri where they connected with large numbers of college students. Young adults relayed their personal stories of how hard it is to find meaningful jobs in their chosen career path due to poor economy and how rising gas prices have already had a negative impact on their very limited budgets. Last fall, Generation Opportunity grassroots organizers met with and trained students from East Central College in Union, Missouri, at the American Student Government Association (ASGA) Conference.

Generation Opportunity encourages young adults to become more involved in the democratic process through voter registration, issue advocacy, social media, and online training in order to increase the impact of their voices. Recently, Generation Opportunity expanded its national grassroots efforts through its online ?Grassroots Training Guide Series? by making all guides available in Spanish. The series is available at http://generationopportunity.org/take-action/ and in Spanish at http://generationopportunity.org/espanol/.

Generation Opportunity commissioned a poll with the polling company, inc./WomanTrend (April 16 ? 22, 2011, +/- 4% margin of error) and a highlighted result for all young Americans ages 18-29 appears below:

Millennials Reject Washington Leadership and Failed Economic Policies:

Delayed Dreams from a Poor Economy and the Lack of Opportunity:

  • ????77% of young people ages 18-29 either have or will delay a major life change or purchase due to economic factors:

o????44% delay buying a home;

o????28% delay saving for retirement;

o????27% delay paying off student loans or other debt;

o????27% delay going back to school/getting more education or training;

o????26% delay changing jobs/cities;

o????23% delay starting a family;

o????18% delay getting married.

Companies don't encourage employee fitness ? - Expat Health

According to recent research over half of insurance workers don?t think their employers encourage health and fitness enough.

The research carried out by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) studied over 2,000 professionals from bankers to health care workers. Over 100 surveyed were from the insurance sector, 67% of them claimed their employers didn?t care about workplace health. The BHF said this reflects a national results.

Gym memberships or discounts are a common company perk and an easy way to encourage a healthy lifestyle among employees. The cost of managing employee sickness and absence has been increasing since 2010. It now costs ?673 per person compared with ?600 in 2010. With this increasing cost companies need to promote fitness and overall healthiness among their staff.

An expat moving abroad on a job assignment might well have some expectations regarding benefits. Salary increases, increased chance of promotion on return and housing are some of things that are negotiable with employers. But in this time of economic turmoil many international companies are cutting what used to be lucrative overseas packages. This includes fringe benefits such as gym memberships.

Employers in Singapore have been drastically cutting expatriate benefit packages because of the popularity of the country with bankers and insurers. Singapore has become an increasingly appealing destination for expats in the finance industry. This surge in popularity has meant companies can cut down on their perks and save money with less risk of putting off potential employees.

If your company doesn?t provide a fitness centre on site there are a range of international gym chains ? Gold?s Gym and Fitness First are two large gym franchises. Most large hotels will also have a gym and swimming pool facility than non-residents can use for a fee.

Brighton 'city of film' | The Latest

Posted in Frank Talking, Homepage, Latest News on March 14, 2012

Frank Gray projected a moving image of Brighton as the next ?city of film?. Frank le Duc reports

Picture the scene. A low-lit interior. A gently spoken film buff pitches his script. Frank Gray tells his hard-bitten audience: ?Brighton and Hove has an unrivalled place in the history of film, an enviable presence in the present and a big part to play in its future.? They may not have been his exact words but that was the gist of his plot. Dr Gray is telling a story about our creative and digital city harnessing its rich heritage and building on its current credentials to boost jobs, tourism and businesses here.

His plot involves setting up a film office, attracting more filmmakers and burnishing our image to attract more visitors. One way to achieve this would be to become an official ?film city?. He has been telling politicians, officials and others how this could be achieved. His goals are about much more than the films that we watch at the cinema. They include everything from educating people about our place in the history of moving pictures to the sharing of slices of life captured on Super 8, video and smart phone.

He accepts that the big screen will be the main attraction for many. And Brighton isn?t short of stardust. Names associated with the city range from Richard Attenborough and Laurence Olivier to Cate Blanchett and Dakota Blue Richards. And more than 60 feature films have been made here in whole or in part in the past 80 years.

Asked to name his own favourites, he reeled off Brighton Rock, The End Of The Affair and Carry On At Your Convenience. But he also played a little-seen black and white clip to an audience of politicians and officials at Hove Town Hall. It showed Magnus Volk?s shortlived ?Daddy Longlegs? railway serenely gliding above the sea. His audience watched with an appreciative awe.
Even this rare clip came with a story of its own. Dr Gray said: ?Most of the films made between 1895 and 1910 have been lost. Only two per cent survive. I?m often asked what missing film would I most like to see? I always gave the same answer ? a film of Volk?s sea-going electric car from 1895. It turned up in Barcelona three years ago.?

?Most of the films made between 1895 and 1910 have been lost. Only two per cent survive?

Dr Gray has been associated with Brighton University for more than 25 years, first as a lecturer in art and film history and now as the director of Screen Archive South East. He is also a co-director of the CineCity film festival. He said: ?Brighton and Hove should become a ?film city?. The city has a powerful cluster of film-related organisations, practices and activities that gives it a very distinctive creative character. But to date they have not been brought together into an effective and dynamic whole.?

He said that a cohesive film cluster would generate benefits to the creative and cultural economy of Brighton and Hove, adding: ?Film is much more than exhibition. It?s not about just going to the cinema. Filmmaking manifests in many different ways, especially because of the digital revolution. Filmmaking is no longer the soul preserve of the industry.?

He cited:
? The film and television industries, making features, series and documentaries
? Advertisements
? Corporate
? Pop video
? Amateur
? Artists
? Students
? Children
He said: ?Filmmaking is only one aspect of the city?s film culture. What are the elements that would make up our film cluster?? He added that the unique strength of Brighton and Hove?s proposed film cluster would be its cross-sector combination of features such as:

? Its history and heritage
? Archive and museum collections
? Festivals
? Exhibition
? Education
? Production
? Cine-tourism
? Special events

He said that a film cluster would help to ?create a new and dynamic identity for the city, a new brand, a new story and would nurture a different sense of the city ? both historically and right now?. He said that it would also ?make best use of existing resources and attract new inward investment?. He called on the council to help make the business case for a film office, especially for new productions. But he said that it should also look at the education and training needed to equip local people for work in the industry.

A city of film
A next step, he suggested, would be for the film cluster to apply to UNESCO to become a ?City of Film?. Bradford and Sydney have already gained film city status. He said that UNESCO had listed a set of requirements which were well met by Brighton and Hove. They included:
? Notable infrastructure related to filmmaking, ie, film studios, cultural/movie landscapes, cinematographic memorabilia, etc

? Historic links to the production, distribution and commercialisation of films, especially within a native/local and culturally relevant context
? A cinematographic legacy in the form of archives, museums, private collections and/or film schools
? A tradition of hosting film festivals, screenings and cinematographic events
? The birthplace, residence and/or workplace of creators and artists in the film industry
? Depiction of the city in films, preferably realised by native creators and artists, and existing films about the city.

Dr Gray addressed all these points in his pitch to the politicians, pointing out that the city has an impressive film heritage. He said: ?Brighton and Hove were at the forefront of the birth of cinema. The practices and studios established by George Albert Smith and James Williamson established the fundamental principles of film editing. Referred to as the ?Brighton School?, these pioneer filmmakers are famous throughout the world.?

England?s Hollywood
Brighton and Hove was the equivalent of Hollywood ? before Hollywood existed ? and film editing and the idea of the close-up shot were invented here. Dr Gray said: ?Over 60 feature films have been made in the city making it, after London, the most filmed city in the nation. Feature films include Brighton Rock, Quadrophenia and Carry On At Your Convenience. This history has established the city?s significant place in the history of British cinema.?

He pointed out that Brighton has the country?s oldest functioning cinema, the Duke Of York?s Picturehouse, and the city?s screen heritage organisations included Brighton Museum, Hove Museum and Screen Archive South East. The latter is the regional film archive and was set up 20 years ago. It is based at Brighton University.

In addition, Brighton has its own film festival, CineCity, which will be in its 10th year in November. CineCity presents British premieres alongside an international programme, artist films and features, works by local film-makers and has a rich archive and heritage strand. Last year the festival presented The Artist at the Duke Of York?s three months before its UK release and five months before its success at the Oscars. CineCity also programmes the film events at the Brighton Festival.
Brighton hosts the world?s first film festival for filmmakers with learning disabilities ? Oska Bright ? which now tours internationally. And there is an annual documentary film festival ? SEE ? as well as other festivals incorporating film and moving image.

In terms of education, he highlighted
? Courses at Sussex University, Brighton University and City College
? Private film school recently under new ownership
? Sixth form college film consortium
? A specialist school at Patcham High, which hosts an annual film awards ceremony for children at the Duke Of York?s
? An emerging creative entrepreneur programme in partnership with Lighthouse and CineCity at the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy
? Work at the Portslade Aldridge Community Academy
Dr Gray said: ?The city is also attractive to filmmakers with a mixture of potential locations encompassing sea, urban areas, countryside, village and a range of architecture. The city has been a backdrop for feature films (Wimbledon, The Boat That Rocked), film shorts, TV series (EastEnders, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries) and adverts (Lucozade, eHarmony).

?It is also a significant base for emerging filmmakers. Lighthouse runs the Guiding Lights scheme for the BFI ? the UK?s most prestigious film industry mentoring scheme ? and also has been selected to run the BFI?s new Short Film Fund.

?Visit Brighton promotes the city?s film heritage through its web pages and its movie map of film locations. During the Centenary of Cinema in 1996, four centenary plaques were erected in the city marking the site of the first screening (25 March 1896 ? the first city in the UK after London), the pioneers? studios and the Duke Of York?s. Walking tours now visit all of the city?s famous film locations.
?The city has a long tradition and successful track record in producing outdoor events, including a dedicated team at the city council that co-ordinates permissions and logistics for council owned land. This means there is a dynamic attitude among licensing and statutory authorities and generally, support or tolerance of the disruption, from residents and businesses.

?In 2011 the outdoor events team handled 135 film-related projects generating ?34,000 income. This was just outdoor filming on council-owned land and does not include the Royal Pavilion, private outdoor locations or studio and indoor-based productions.

?The city has a strong skill base across all aspects of film production and pre-production: producers, filmmakers, writers, performers, set builders, designers, animators, technicians, production crew, PR and marketing companies, stewards and security, caterers, etc.?

Like a film director without the noisy ego, Frank Gray is calling the actors on to the set. In this case the actors include the councillors and officials who, unusually, applauded him after his presentation. It?s fair to say that he inspires his audience with his black and white glance at the past, his survey of the current scene and the glimpse he offered into a promising future.

The narrative is clear as Dr Gray tries to bring together various organisations with different goals in the hope that they will work cohesively. His plan for a film office to stimulate new production in the city, promote cine-tourism and support the related careers opportunities won?t happen without funds. And this isn?t a big budget picture. As he stepped back from microphone at Hove Town Hall, the script may have read: ?Fade.? It is of course too early for the credits to roll. Cue the cameras and hope the right people focus on what could well be Brighton?s next big idea.

Company Sponsporship for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren ...

Company Sponsporship for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Golf Day

Central Coast Family Support facilitates the support program Grandparents Raising Grandchildren to support families where grandparents have the full time care and responsibility for their grandchildren. The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren is the only program on the Central Coast specifically addressing the needs of children and their grandparents where there is an absence of their biological parents. These situations can arise because of drug and alcohol issues, neglect or abandonment, long term illness or death of the biological parents. In many cases the children have been removed from their parents due to abuse and mistreatment.

Our program provides support to grandparent headed families through one on one family support, advocacy, counselling, referral, support groups, respite and social events for the children and their families. Without grandparents stepping in at times of crisis or loss to take over the day to day care of their grandchildren, these children may be placed in foster care. It is of utmost importance for this project to gain some additional funding to ensure we can continue to provide the best support possible for this forgotten sector of our community.

To help fund the program, we are holding a Charity Golf Day on Friday 30th March 2012 at the Shelly Beach Golf Club. Your company can help the children of these families by sponsoring a hole at the golf day. You can help in a number of ways including:
. A fun day of golf for a team players
. A presentation lunch for each of the players
. Signage opportunity for your company at a hole for the day
. Media coverage
. Your company will also be acknowledged as a golf day sponsor during the presentation luncheon.
. Your company may use Central Coast Family Support's name in national advertising (use of our logo on your website).

The day will bring together business people and individuals across the Coast who want give back to the community. I am hoping that this may provide a mutual benefit to both our organisations, with much needed fundraising for the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program plus promotion and advertising for your company.

This is a great opportunity to support your community and make a real difference in the lives of Central Coast families. Please note that all payments and sponsorship for this event are TAX DEDUCTIBLE (Central Coast Family Support is a registered charity DGR:900033843). If you would like to be a part of this community event or would like some further information, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Scientists document first consumption of abundant life form, Archaea

Monday, March 12, 2012

A team of scientists has documented for the first time that animals can and do consume Archaea ? a type of single-celled microorganism thought to be among the most abundant life forms on Earth.

Archaea that consume the greenhouse gas methane were in turn eaten by worms living at deep-sea cold seeps off Costa Rica and the West Coast of the United States. Archaea perform many key ecosystem services including being involved with nitrogen cycling, and they are known to be the main mechanism by which marine methane is kept out of the atmosphere.

The finding of this new study adds a wrinkle to scientific understand of greenhouse gas cycles. Results of the study, which was funded by the National Science Foundation, have been published online in the International Society for Microbial Ecology Journal, a subsidiary of the journal Nature.

"This opens up a new avenue of research," said Andrew Thurber, a post-doctoral researcher at Oregon State University and lead author on the study. "Archaea weren't even discovered until 1977, and were thought to be rare and unimportant, but we are beginning to realize that they not only are abundant, but they have roles that have not fully been appreciated."

Archaea are considered one of the three "domains of life" on Earth, along with bacteria and eukaryota (plants and animals). Despite their abundance, no member of the Archaea domain has been known to be part of a food web.

One of the basic questions scientists have asked is whether this life form could act as a food source for animals. To answer this, the researchers performed a laboratory study during which they fed two types of Archaea to the worms, as well as meals of bacteria, spinach or rice, and the worms thrived on all of the food sources, growing at the same rate.

"That showed us that Archaea can be a viable food source for at least some animals," Thurber pointed out.

Thurber and his colleagues initially were looking at biological life forms at a cold seep in the deep ocean off Costa Rica, when they opened up a rock and found worms living within the crevices. They found that the worms had been feeding on Archaea, which had, in turn, been consuming methane. They were able to trace the isotopic signature of the methane from the Archaea to the worms.

From what they learned from the Costa Rican study, the scientists also discovered that worms of the same family as those found in the rocks consume methane-munching Archaea at cold seeps off northern California and at Hydrate Ridge off the central Oregon coast, west of Newport. The researchers think the family of worms, the Dorvilleids, uses its teeth to scrape the Archaea off rocks.

The consumption of Archaea by grazers, a process coined "archivory" by Thurber in the article, is particularly interesting because the only way it could be documented was by tracing the isotopic biomarkers from the methane. When the researchers attempted to trace consumption of Archaea through lipid types and other mechanisms, they failed because the chemicals and proteins broke down within the worms.

"It could be that many other animals are consuming Archaea but we haven't been able to detect it," pointed out Thurber, who did much of the research as a doctoral candidate at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. "We still haven't found the right technique to identify animals that eat Archaea that don't rely on methane, but now we know to look.

"Hopefully, this will open up a lot of new research," Thurber added, "and provide a greater understanding of how the world works."

The deep ocean sequesters vast amounts of methane and researchers believe that Archaea consume a majority of it before it reaches the water column. The role of Archaea consumers now will have to be taken into effect, Thurber said.

"We're not yet sure of the implications," said Thurber, who is affiliated with OSU's College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. "But Archaea are found in many different places, from estuaries to the deep sea, so it is possible that they fit into food webs beyond the cold seeps where we documented the process."

Exxon, Iraq agree on West Qurna oilfield payments

KUWAIT (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil and Baghdad have reached agreement for the U.S.-based company to be paid in oil for work on the huge West Qurna-1 oilfield, after months of negotiations over contract terms, an Iraqi oil official said.

The foreign oil companies involved in Iraq's oil expansion generally prefer to be compensated for capital expenditure and service fees in oil, because cash payments are more complicated to arrange.

BP , which leads the Rumaila project, and Italy's Eni , leader of the Zubair project, had signed up to Iraq's oil sales agreement from the outset, the first step towards being paid in crude.

Exxon and minority partner Royal Dutch Shell held out as they sought to tighten up some contractual loose ends, said an industry source.

After lengthy negotiations, the parties have reached an agreement, in which the world's largest publicly traded oil company also will get paid in crude, the Iraqi official said. Exxon and Shell spent $910 million on West Qurna-1 last year and were repaid $470 million in cash.

"In principle there is agreement, although there is nothing in writing yet," he said by telephone from Baghdad. "Exxon asked us to rephrase some of the wording, which in general will not affect the provisions of (State Oil Marketing Organization) SOMO's oil export agreement."

Iraq has signed service contracts with international oil companies targeting a total production capacity of 12 million barrels per day by 2017. But industry observers say infrastructure problems and logistical bottlenecks are likely to limit their output to about half that level.

Under the terms of Iraq's service contracts, it is crucial for companies to be paid on a timely basis for their projects to be profitable.

The U.S. oil and gas major has angered Baghdad by signing an exploration deal with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), which the central government considers illegal.

The KRG announced in November the signing of a deal for six exploration blocs with Exxon, the first major oil company to deal directly with the Kurds in northern Iraq.

Exxon Chief Executive Rex Tillerson said last week the company was committed to working in both areas of the country.

Exxon could not be reached for immediate comment.
